The Toy Department – Episode 443

In Episode 443, Madden and Kolsky discuss the various challenges presented by the sub-zero temperatures they’re experiencing before launching into:

  • Netflix’s new dramatic thriller His & Hers (5:30), and how it fails to reach the quality of a lifetime movie despite some heavy hitters in the cast…
  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (13:20) and the wisdom of major IP properties telling small, disconnected stories…
  • The Night Manager (19:20), which came out ten years ago, but is really great and the guys needed to watch Season 1 before they could get to the brand new Season 2…
  • Peacock’s new Moscow spy series Ponies (23:55), the indelible charm of its leads and the desire for more high-quality shows like this one…
  • Some thoughts on the Oscar nominations (34:00) and what they say about the state of movies in 2026…
  • Homework for next week (44:45), including: the Oscar-nominated Train Dreams on Netflix, the new Damon/Affleck movie The Rip (also on Netflix), the Amazon Prime Video show Steal, and the new Marvel series Wonder Man…

The Toy Department – Episode 152

In Episode 152, Derek Madden and Matt Kolsky set the scene — a scene where Kolsky is podcasting from a hot tub in an undisclosed location — before bathing in topics such as:

  • Oscar nominations (2:40) — who’s missing, what’s interesting and what the guys hope to see…
  • Netflix’s documentary Fyre (15:10), covering the failed Fyre Festival, including some thoughts about the simultaneous Hulu film on the same subject and who the real victims of the disaster are…
  • Kolsky goes solo for a quick review of Showtime’s SMILF (26:50) and encourages everyone to give it a look…
  • Showtime’s new comedy Black Monday (28:35) and how it was a surprising delight for both guys…
  • Netflix’s Sex Education (33:40), which is another strong recommend from both guys and features the music of previously mentioned Kolsky favorite Ezra Furman…
  • A quick check-in on Top Chef (38:15), featuring the CARNÉ man and thoughts on show favorite Justin…
  • Homework for next week (40:55), including: the return of Broad City on Comedy Central, and a new show that follows it called The Other Two, plus a couple of Netflix shows — Killer Mike’s Trigger Warning and the Penn Badgley stalker drama YOU…

The Toy Department – Episode 10

In Episode 10, Derek Madden and Matt Kolsky start with a quick post-Super Bowl debrief – did Kolsky survive? How did his dumplings turn out? (that’s a literal question) Then it’s the Great Coldplay Debate (9:00) as the gentlemen stake out their positions and duke it out. After probably too much of that (though not as much as existed on the original recording) the topic shifts to movie talk with a breakdown of the Oscar-nominated Spotlight (33:50), followed by a brief discussion of the Grammy’s and other assorted music stuff (42:00). Finally, a strong close where a purported tease to next week turns into a short conversation about JJ Redick’s new podcast (46:30).
